Watching your baby learn to move is an exciting part of parenthood! Let's explore gross motor skill development from 6 to 18 months, offering activities and tips to support their physical journey.

Milestones:

6-9 Months:

Babies typically learn to sit unsupported, roll over, and begin to crawl.

9-12 Months:

Many babies start pulling themselves up to stand and may begin to cruise along furniture.

12-18 Months:

Most babies take their first independent steps and begin to walk with increasing confidence. They may also start to climb stairs and run.

Activities and Tips:

  • Tummy time: Provide regular tummy time from an early age to strengthen neck and back muscles.

  • Create a safe play space: Ensure a safe environment for exploration, free from hazards.

  • Encourage reaching and grasping: Place toys slightly out of reach to encourage reaching and movement.

  • Provide opportunities for crawling: Create tunnels and obstacles to encourage crawling.

  • Offer support for pulling to stand: Provide stable furniture for babies to hold onto as they pull themselves up.

  • Celebrate their successes: Offer plenty of praise and encouragement as they reach new milestones.
